Work

It starts with something that catches me enough to keep coming back to it – a gaze, a shape, a colour or an encounter. On the canvas I then reshape it my own way.

Wings

Birds are a symbol of freedom, lightness and fragility for me. I’m fascinated by their shapes, colours and endless variety. I never get tired of watching or listening to them – or painting them. Sometimes one encounter outdoors is enough for an image to stay in my head until it eventually makes its way onto canvas. And sometimes it happens the other way around: first comes the painting, then the wish to spot the bird in the wild. That’s the case with the kingfisher.

Women

Female faces keep finding their way into my work. In my portraits, I put a lot of emphasis on the eyes – I’m fascinated by how much expression and emotion they can hold. I like to let reality dissolve into looser, more abstract areas, so the result isn’t always a portrait of someone specific. I’m more interested in character, mood or a particular moment, leaving enough space for the viewer to find something of their own in it. Painting someone I actually know is a welcome change – something of my own relationship with that person naturally finds its way into the painting too.

Creatures

I paint animals much like I paint people – I’m interested in their expressions, personalities and everything that makes each one its own distinct creature. Sometimes they’re serious and calm, other times a little odd or funny, and that’s exactly what I enjoy about them. I spend a lot of time outdoors, so it feels natural to bring a piece of that world back into the studio with me. On canvas, I get to experience it all over again, in my own way.

Flora

My home is a bit of an urban jungle, so it was probably only a matter of time before plants found their way onto canvas too. I’m fascinated by the variety of their forms, the strange balance between order and complete punk, and how quickly they grow and change. And, of course, by the endless shades of green. Many of these paintings are portraits of specific plants I live with. Once I start painting them, though, I like to push them further and let the colours take on a life of their own.

Watercolours & drawings

Watercolour is still relatively new territory for me. I’m learning to trust it more, let go of control and allow the water and pigment to do part of the work themselves. That’s what I find both the hardest and the most interesting about it. Sometimes I just feel like sketching and working with whatever happens to be at hand – pencil, coloured pencil, marker or paint – mixing things freely as I go. That looser way of working is gradually finding its way into my paintings on canvas too.
